A One-Day Tour of Samarkand by Car

Samarkand is one of the most famous cities of the Great Silk Road and the cultural heart of Uzbekistan. Magnificent madrasahs, mausoleums, and mosques from the Timurid era have survived here for centuries. A journey through the historic center offers a glimpse into more than 2,000 years of history.

Registan

The first stop is Registan, the main square of Samarkand and one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks in Central Asia, famous for its turquoise domes and intricate mosaics.

The complex consists of three madrasahs (Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilya-Kori), built between the 15th and 17th centuries. For centuries, Registan served as the city's public center, hosting celebrations, markets, and important state events.

Registan – Gur-e-Amir: 2 km

Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum

The next stop is Gur-e-Amir, the mausoleum of the great conqueror and ruler Timur (Tamerlane). This masterpiece of Islamic architecture became a model for many later mausoleums across the region. Its massive ribbed dome covered in blue mosaics and richly decorated interior make it one of Samarkand's most impressive monuments.

Gur-e-Amir – Bibi-Khanym Mosque: 2.5 km

Bibi-Khanym Mosque

One of the largest historic mosques in Central Asia, Bibi-Khanym Mosque was commissioned by Timur after his campaign to India. At the time, it was considered one of the grandest structures in the Islamic world.

Today visitors can explore the restored complex, its spacious courtyard, and the famous marble Quran stand.

Bibi-Khanym Mosque – Siab Bazaar: 300 m

Located next to the mosque, Siab Bazaar is Samarkand's most famous market. Here you will find fresh fruit, spices, nuts, dried fruits, and the city's famous round bread. It is a great place to experience the atmosphere of Samarkand and sample local specialities.

Siab Bazaar – Shah-i-Zinda: 1.5 km

The route concludes with a visit to Shah-i-Zinda, one of the most beautiful and spiritually significant places in Samarkand. This stunning complex of mausoleums is famous for its intricate blue and turquoise tilework and is considered one of the masterpieces of Timurid architecture.

Optional Stop: Ulugh Beg Observatory – 4 km

If time allows, you can also visit the Ulugh Beg Observatory, located about 4 km from

Shah-i-Zinda

In the 15th century, Ulugh Beg, Timur's grandson, a ruler, scholar, and astronomer, worked here and compiled one of the most accurate star catalogs of his time.

After the tour, your driver will take you back to your hotel or any other convenient location in Samarkand.
